ادوات العطف الثانوية (subordinate conjunction)
بما ان الجملة الفرعية (الثانوية) لايمكنها ان تقف كجملة كاملة لذلك فان تعتمد او تستعين بالجمل الاخرى , ولهذا فأنك عندما تضيف عبارة بقصد توضيح بعض جوانب ما تقول اذن انت تستخدم طريقة الربط الثانوية, حيث تسمى العبارة التي تبدأ بأداة الربط بالعبارة الثانوية ( subordinate clause) كما في الامثلة التالية ...
When an atom is split, it releases neutrons. (عندما تنقسم الذرة فانها تحرر النيترونات)
If he had had a gun, he would have killed the man.

وللعلم فان الجملة الفرعية تتكون من 8 انواع من الجمل , حيث توجد ادوات ربط لكل جملة وهذا موضح : ...
1- when, before, after, since, while, as, until, as soon as -
حالما , حتى (الى ان) , كـ (مثل) , بينما , منذ , بعد , قبل , عندمـــا وتستخدم مع : Time clause الجملة الزمنية
if, unless مالم , اذا وتستخدم مع:
Conditional lause جملة الشرط
in order to, so that لكي ,لكي وتستخدم مع:
Purpose clause الجملة الغرضية
because, since, as احيانا تأتي (since, as) بمعنى لان , لان وتستخدم مع:
Reason clause جملة السبب
so … that, such … that (هكذا ... لدرجة) , (جداً ... لدرجة ) وتستخدم مع:
Result clause جملة النتيجة
although, though, however, whatever , wherever مهما , اينما , بينما , ولو ان وتستخدم مع:
Concessive clauses جمل التناقض
as … as , so … as , than تستخدم للمقارنة وتستخدم مع: comparison clause الجملة المقارنة
as, as if, as though, like, the مثل , وكأنه وتستخدم مع: Clause of manner جملة الطريقة
